What is Colombia Like? 🇨🇴

Greetings from North America!

That’s right, we’re back in Columbus, the home of Reyka and her family. And let me tell you, it feels good.

We got concrete custard ice cream on Friday. I scootered with Reyka’s cousin today. We’re having an American Idol watch party with some friends tomorrow night.

Home. Is. Nice. 😌

Exhausted and excited, on our last flight of the trip.

Colombia Impressions

  • Phenomenal food. Like, SPECTACULAR food. Like, UNREAL FOOD! I mentioned them briefly last week, but I had the best tacos of my entire life in Medellin, Colombia. And that’s a big deal because, as Reyka can attest, I’ve eaten a lot of tacos in my days. They consisted of corn tortillas, hummus, sautéed mushrooms and pineapple, shredded spinach and sesame seeds. It was life changing. No joke, Reyka and I have talked about traveling all the way back to Medellin just to have the tacos again. If you ever find yourself down there in need of tacos, the restaurant is called Vegan and Veggie Medellin. You’re welcome. And yeah, the arepas everywhere else were superb. We had burritos that hit the spot and the coffee is world class everywhere you go. Foodies, listen here – Colombia should be at the top of your list.
  • Safe. Safe. Safe. Colombia got a bad rep during Escobar’s hay-day (justly so.) But it’s currently in the exciting process of doing a full 180! Medellin? I would live there in a heart beat. And many Americans do. The expat population there is booming. Bogotá? No problem. Well, I did accidentally see a woman going 💩 on the street, but hey. When you gotta go, you gotta go.
  • Cheap. So, wonderfully cheap. We got a penthouse airbnb with a full kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom on the 18th floor of downtown Bogotaá. Guess how much. $30!! I know, right?

  • Optimism. There’s an excitement in the air. We were in Bogotá on their Labor Day, and ended up passing a parade. The folks seemed proud to be Colombian. They seemed determined for the future of their country to be brighter. It was fun to witness.
  • Chess! Or “ajedrez,” in Spanish. It’s popular in Colombia! I played a guy on the street for an hour and it was a blast. Reyka did get a bit bored, and ended up standing behind asking me how to win for a while. But she’s glad I did it.
